For those interested in duplicating or revising any of the tables in the Gender Key Figures, the specific mapping between the LIS variables and the table output are provided in an Excel workbook.
The Excel mapping provides information, by country, about the variables created in the recoding program. Information includes variable contents, variable name in the recoding program, the relevant universe, the standard formula used, and the value labels. For each country, it is noted if the standard formula applies, and provides the precise recoding if the standard formula cannot be used in that country.
Adjust Gender Key Figures to a Specific Research Project
(Registered users only)
Users may wish to use the Excel sheet to determine the extent of standard recoding and to identify where program coding changes need to be incorporated in order to adjust to a specific research project.
In order to adapt the Gender Key Figures to specific research projects, the data are available by using a program-specific macro (similar to calling the traditional data sets). These macros are as follows:
- Stata : $gkf_w5
- SPSS : gkf_w5
- SAS : &gkf_w5
Note that SAS users must point to a format catalog while accessing the Gender Key Figures dataset: &GKF_w5f
Users wishing to change the coding of specific variables for their own projects are advised to do the following in their programs:
- If variables from the LIS household- or person-level files are needed, merge the Gender Key Figures data with the appropriate country-year data set(s)
- Recode the Gender Key Figures variables by adjusting the pre-assigned values in the Gender Key Figures data, or by dropping the unwanted variables and replacing them with new code
- Run the analysis as normal
