THE "CANBERRA GROUP" |
- AN EXPERT GROUP ON HOUSEHOLD INCOME STATISTICS - |

In December 1996, the Australian Bureau of Statistics organized a
meeting of experts to further the development of statistics on household
income in particular and, more generally, on household economic
well-being. This initiative came in response to the observation that
while advances were being made in household income statistics in many
countries, national statistical offices were facing many problems in
common. A combined approach to solving these conceptual and
methodological problems would result in improved national statistics and
also improved international comparisons for data on income distributions
and poverty. The Expert Group took its name from the venue of this first meeting and will be known as the Canberra Group. Four meeting were held:
