THE "CANBERRA GROUP"

- AN EXPERT GROUP ON HOUSEHOLD INCOME STATISTICS -

In December 1996, the Australian Bureau of Statistics organized a meeting of experts to further the development of statistics on household income in particular and, more generally, on household economic well-being.  This initiative came in response to the observation that while advances were being made in household income statistics in many countries, national statistical offices were facing many problems in common.  A combined approach to solving these conceptual and methodological problems would result in improved national statistics and also improved international comparisons for data on income distributions and poverty.
The Expert Group took its name from the venue of this first meeting and will be known as the Canberra Group.

Four meeting were held:
  • 1st First Meeting (12/1996): Canberra, Australia
  • 2nd Meeting (03/1998): Den Hague, The Netherlands
  • 3rd Meeting (06/99): Ottawa, Canada
  • 4th and Final Meeting (05/00) : Differdange, Luxembourg
