Notes

I. DEMOGRAPHIC BACKGROUND (DB)

DB01   Because of the very special survey method (see document "General presentation of the survey" for details) only one person for each household is interviewed. This is automatically the "reference person".
DB02 s07is01
DB03 s07bb03a Only people aged 15 and more are interviewed and are therefore included in the sample
DB04 s07is03
DB05 s07is05, s07is051
DB06 s07is07k, s07is07t
DB07   *
DB08   *
DB09
DB10   *
DB11 s07bb02, s07it01 Brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law are cosidered "related by blood".
DB12   *
DB13 s07bb02
DB14   *
DB15   *
DB16   *
DB17 s07bdu1
II. WORK STATUS (WS)
WS01 s07bd01, s07bd02, s07bd03, s07bd04 The individuals who were not working because "on lay-off", who still have a job contract, have been considered as "workers" - according to the indication of the Swiss CSO - and are therefore in the sub-sample to which questions in section FJ apply. They are in fact people that keep a formal link with their job and are paid even during their absence.
WS02 s07bd04 Because of the special way the military service is organised in Switzerland, the "conscript" who have kept their job during the military service are considered as "workers".
Category WS02=1 (absent because of slack work for technical or economic reasons) does not exist because those individuals have been included in category WS01=3 (was not working because on lay-off). The exact definition of this category in the original questionnaire is precisely "
chômage partiel/technique". These groups of workers have nevertheless been included in the subsample to which questions in section FJ apply.
III. EMPLOYMENT CHARACTERISTICS - FIRST (MAIN) JOB (FJ)
FJ01   *
FJ02 s07bgu1
FJ02b s07bgu1 A distinction is made between self-employed who receive a profit (FJ02b=1-3) and those who receive a fixed wage from their own enterprise (FJ02b=4-6).
FJ03 s07em03, s07lm03 NACE/Rev. 1, 3 digits
FJ04 s07bfu5i ISCO classification, 4 digits
FJ05   *
FJ06 s07em03, s07lm03
FJ07 kant
FJ08 s07ee00k
FJ09 s07ek02, s07ek041 Questions about part-time are not asked to the apprentices, who are therefore coded as missing.
FJ10 s07bhu1 Given that the original classification did not include the categories that are present in the standardised variable FJ10, the original classification, based on the type of short-term contract, has been entirely preserved.
FJ11 s07ee09k, s07le09k
FJ12 s07bku2, s07lk011, s07lk014 Apprentices are asked how many hours they usually work in the enterprise and how many hours they spend at school. Only the hours worked in the enterprise are taken into account for variable FJ12. In the few cases the individual was not able to distinguish, they have been coded as missing.
FJ13 s07ek08, s07lk081, s07lk084 Apprentices are asked how many hours they have worked in the enterprise and how many hours they have spent at school. Only the hours worked in the enterprise are taken into account for variable FJ13. In the few cases the individual was not able to distinguish, they have been coded as missing.
FJ14 s07ek101, s07ek09 Persons who were not able to quantify the number of hours worked in the reference week (and have therefore FJ13 equal missing) are nevertheless asked whether they judge having worked more, less, or the same number of hours as usual, and - if less than usual - why. They are therefore included in variable FJ14.
"Less because bank holidays/annual holidays" are included in the same category, FJ14=11
FJ15 s07el01, s07ll01
FJ16 s07el03, s07ll03, s07blu8 Evening work is defined as during the hours 19:00-24:00
FJ17 s07el04, s07ll04, s07blu8 Night work is defined as during the hours 24:00-06:00
FJ18 s07el09, s07ll09, s07blu7
FJ19 s07el10, s07ll10, s07blu7
FJ20 s07ei03, s07ei04 This question is not asked to apprentices, who are therefore coded as missing

SJ03 s07em03n NACE/Rev. 1, 3 digits
SJ04   !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SJ05   *
SJ06 s07ek08n
SJ07 s07ehu1n In the case of Switzerland, this variable refers explicitly to the type of contract and not (as a more generic question about regular, occasional or seasonal type of job may induce) to the perception of the individual. A "regular" job is therefore defined as an indefinite contract, an "occasional" job as a short-term, temporary, occasional, or interim job and a "seasonal" job as a contract for a seasonal job.

PE01 s07nx01

SE03 s07ae08k This question is asked only to the unemployed, i.e. those who are seeking employment (or have already found a job that will start later) and who are available to start working within 2 weeks

SE04b s07bd092
SE04c s07bd093
SE05 s07nn01 The exact question, in the Swiss questionnaire, is: "You are not working and you are not seeking a job. However, if an interesting job were offered to you, would you be ready to accept it?"
SE06 s07bd16, s07bd12, s07bd141 The question is asked only to job seekers and to those who have already found a job that will start in 5 weeks or more. It is not asked to inactive people (who would nevertheless like to work) and to employed people who are looking for a job.
Those who are classified as SE06=1 (person could start to work immediately - i.e. within 2 weeks) are those who 1) have already found a new job that will start within 2 weeks or 2) would be able to start working within 2 weeks (including those who have found a new job that will start later than in 2 weeks)
