I. DEMOGRAPHIC BACKGROUND (DB)

DB01 lprm The reference person, according to the French questionnaire, is:
- there is only one couple in the household: the man is the ref. person
- there is more than one couple: the oldest man (part of a couple) among the active (incl. the unemployed) men; the oldest man if there are no active individuals
- one single parent family: the mother or the father (Attention: a grand-father or grand-mother + grand-children are not a single parent family. This typology is considered under 'other cases' - see below)
- two or more single parent families: the oldest active (including the unemployed) individual (among the mothers or the fathers); the oldest individual if there are no active individuals
- other cases: all the individuals are considered as 'single individuals' and the reference person is the oldest active individual among all the 'single individuals' or the oldest individual if there are no active indiv.
A child younger than 15 can never be the reference person.
DB02 s
DB03 naia
DB04 m the marital status is asked only to individuals aged 15 or more
DB05 nosce, n
DB06 nresid the question applies only to non-French individuals; individuals who became French because of marriage/personal choice are not asked about how long they are resident in France
DB07 pnai the classification does not correspond to the one of DB05; in the case of DB07 it is less detailed
DB08   *
DB09 rg
DB10 tu90
DB11 tymen90
DB12   *
DB13 np among the total number of persons in the household the children are obviously counted as well; given that the children younger than 15 are not included in the dataset, DB13 is bigger (or equal) than the number of persons that you can calculate based on variable TI01
DB14   this is the number of non-married children aged less than 18 living in the household
DB15
DB16
DB17 fi this is the "present status" of the individual as it is recorded by the French questionnaire
II. WORK STATUS (WS)
WS01 fi, am, ht, ohtm Given that there is no direct question, in the French questionnaire, about the working status during a reference week, variable WS01 has been built by crossing information about the "present status" (original variable FI, which is recorded in its original form into variable DB17) with information on hours worked in the reference week.
People answering that they have worked a positive number of hours (despite they might have declared 'currently not working') have been classified WS01=1.
People declaring of having a job, without answering how many hours they worked in the reference week, have been left missing, because it is not possible to determine whether they actually worked in the reference week.
People classified WS01=3 are those 'on
chômage partiel'
WS02 ohtm It is not possible, in the French questionnaire, to distinguish between 'bad weather' and 'slack work for technical or economic reasons'. WS02=1 means therefore 'bad weather, slack work for technical or economic reasons'.
III. EMPLOYMENT CHARACTERISTICS - FIRST (MAIN) JOB (FJ)
FJ01 peta
FJ02 aidfam, st, chpub, nse
FJ02b indep, q
FJ03 naf (2 digits) country-specific classification (Nomenclature d'Activités Françaises)
FJ04 p, naf the original occupational variables follow the French-specific PCS classification (nomenclature des Professions et Catégories Socioprofessionnelles). The PCS has been translated into ISCO using the conversion program provided by INSEE.
FJ05 pub, chpub, aidfam FJ05=3 'other' includes the self-employed and the unpaid family workers
FJ06   *
FJ07
FJ08 ancentr
FJ09 tp No indication is given about the reason why the individual works part-time
FJ10 interim, stj, deb, det FJ10=5 means in this case ‘person has a temporary, fixed-term or seasonal job’. In the French questionnaire, in fact, no reason is given about the reasons why a person has a temporary job contract
FJ11 duintm, duints, dustagem, dustages, dudetm, dudets
FJ12 hh
FJ13 ht
FJ14 ohtp, ohtm Note that:
- the 'bad weather' reason is included in 'slack work for technical economic reasons';
- 'annual holidays' includes also 'absence for personal reasons';
- the category 'other reasons' includes workers on lay-off.
FJ15   *
FJ16 soir
FJ17 nuit
FJ18 samedi
FJ19 dimanche
FJ20 maison
FJ21 creact, reche FJ21=2 includes people who want to find a more suitable job under the profile of the occupation and the education level '
FJ21=3 means 'seeking a second job or a job with longer working hours'
FJ21=4 includes
wage, structure of working hours, effort and health reasons
FJ21=5 includes willingness of having a job closer to home, a job in a different region, other reasons
VI. INFORMATION ABOUT SECOND JOB (SJ)
SJ01 sec
SJ02 sec SJ02=1 includes self-employed with and without employees, as well as dependent workers. Only the 'unpaid family workers' may be singled out (SJ02=4)
SJ03 nafsec country-specific classification (Nomenclature d'Activités Françaises)
SJ04 cssec country-specific classification (Catégorie Socioprofessionnelle)
SJ05   *
SJ06 hhsec
SJ07 regsec
V. PREVIOUS WORK EXPERIENCE OF PERSONS NOT IN EMPLOYMENT (PE)
NB. In the French questionnaire only those who are not working but have worked in the last year - after January of the year preceding the interview - and those at their first interview who are not working now but have already worked in the past are asked about previous work experience
PE01 aa, aam, am, fi
PE02 stac, nsea
PE03 nafa country-specific classification (Nomenclature d'Activités Françaises)
PE04 csa country-specific classification (Catégorie Socioprofessionnelle)
PE05 dea, mm, acta, actm
PE06 circa PE06=2 includes all personal reasons (family reasons), including education (i.e. PE06=4)
VI. SEARCH FOR EMPLOYMENT (SE)
NB. In the French questionnaire, only people that are in one of these situations answer the section ‘job search’:
-- are unemployed;
-- are looking for a job (even if they have already one);
-- are registered at the public employment agency;
-- are willing to work (even if they are not working and/or not looking for a job);
-- have a job that will start later.
So the filter is stricter than the one foreseen in LES (e.g. inactive people do not answer to this section)
SE01 dec, dre1, reche SE01=5 includes also people doing the military service
SE01=7 includes essentially the early-retired, given that SE questions do not apply to the ‘normal retired’ (unless they are including themselves in one of the categories to which these questions applies - see above)
SE02 re, ner those who answer that they are looking for both a self-employed activity and a wage-paid job have been put in category SE02=1
SE03 drem, dre1, dre2
SE04 mre1-mre12 The individual is asked whether he/she has used the 12 methods of search listed in the questionnaire, not only about 'the first three methods'. It may be possible, therefore, that up to 12 methods are indicated, though this latter is an exceptional case. When the individual indicates more than 3 methods, three of them have been randomly selected, giving preference to the active methods.
SE04, SE04b and SE04c are therefore listed with no order of importance.
The category SE04=1 (SE04b=1, SE04c=1) 'contacted Public Employment Office to find work' includes both those who simply signed at the PEO and those who did more active steps at the PEO, like for example, participating at initiatives promoted by the PEO.
The three passive methods, SE04=9, SE04=10, SE04=11, appear only in SE04 and not in SE04b and SE04c because those individuals are considered not searching for a job (in the French questionnaire)  and to non-searching individuals only one reason for this is asked for.
SE04b mre1-mre12
SE04c mre1-mre12
SE05 souh
SE06 dispo, nondisp The category SE06=6 'illness or incapacity', means 'temporary illness'. Those who are permanently ill are included in SE06=7 'other reasons'. In fact, in the French questionnaire, 'long illness, accident, pre-retirement' are all part of the category 'other reasons'.
SE07 cre There is a slight difference between the variable CRE of the French dataset and the variable SE07 of LES, even if both are asked to the unemployed. CRE question is: ‘Following which circumstance is the person without job?’ - This means that, to give an example, for the long-term unemployed who lost the job, then withdrawn from the labour force, then started again to look for a job, CRE will probably register their status before losing the job (‘workers losing a job’) whereas SE07 would instead register ‘out of the labour force’ or ‘domestic responsibilities’.
SE07=5 means 'persons that used to work, but have stopped any activity because of family/personal/health reasons'
SE07=6 is a new category including those who never worked before, but would like to work now (of course individuals who never worked before are also in the category SE07=2 and SE07=3)
SE08 office, alc, vb15 While all people are asked about registration at the public employment office, only the individuals looking for a job (or another job) or willing to work even if not searching, or registered at the public employment office, or who have already found a job not yet started, are asked about receipt of benefit. Individuals who are not asked have been classified as 'non receiving benefit'. See variable SE08b to determine who - among those who were asked - is answering explicitly not to receive benefit.
SE08b alc, vb15 The two categories of benefit recorded in the French questionnaire are the 'unemployment benefit paid by the ASSEDIC (Association pour l'emploi dans l'industrie et le commerce - the office in charge of the administration of the benefit system)' and the 'allocation du revenu minimum d'insertion'. The former includes both the unemployment insurance and the unemployment assistance benefit, which therefore cannot be disentangled; the latter is a special means-tested benefit paid to persons aged at least 25 who sign a 'contrat d'insertion' ('integration contract'). This is a formal engagement between the individual and the 'local integration committee' to take active steps (like a stage, a special contract of employment, etc.) to facilitate the social-economic integration of the person.
SE09 cre The actual question in the French questionnaire is: Why is person without job? The hypothesis underlying the choice of this variable for SE09 is therefore is that this circumstance motivates the research for those who are searching. The source is the same as for variable SE07, but the categories are re-arranged.
SE09=5 includes
every kind of fixed term, temporary, occasional job
VII. SITUATION OF INACTIVE PERSONS (IA)
IA01 fi
VIII. EDUCATION AND TRAINING (ET)
Questions ET03-ET06 do not refer to the previous 4 weeks but 'at present'
ET01 dieg
ET02 dies, diet The upper education level has been preferred over the technical/professional education level for those individuals who indicate both
ET03 init Individuals who are classified as ET02=2 'education/training - regular schedule' are those who have been attending education without interruption for more than one year (except those who interrupted because of compulsory military service or maternity leave)
ET04 foact
ET05 duform The total length of the stage/program is recorded.
This variable applies only to those who - aged 15 and more - are receiving
specific training (no general education, no apprenticeship)
ET06 hcform Only hours of real training are recorded.
This variable applies only to those who - aged 15 and more - are receiving
specific training (no general education, no apprenticeship)

LF02
LF03
LF04
XI. EARNINGS AND INCOME (EI)
EI01 salred This is the net monthly wage; payments not related to the wage are excluded
EI02 primfr The meaning of EI02 is ‘other additional annual payments to the person related to his/her main activity, e.g. 13th month, production bonus, etc.’.
This is the only other piece of information about personal earnings in addition to the monthly wage; that is why we have decided to keep it here.
Note that, while EI01 records the monthly wage, EI02 records instead the total annual amount of extra-payments.
EI03   *
EI04   *
XII. TECHNICAL ITEMS (TI)
TI01 aire, imloc A unique household identification number has been created based on the variables aire and imloc.
TI02   *
TI03   The serial number of the person is unique inside the household. Before creating it, the individuals have been sorted by ti01 and db01, so the head of the household has always ti03=1
TI04 extri
