VISITING SCHOLARS PROGRAM

WHAT IS OFFERED

The Luxembourg Income Study has an on-site Visiting Scholars program. Awarded visits vary from one to six weeks, depending on the nature of the research project.

Financial support is provided to cover economy class travel expenses and reasonable accommodation.  Visitors also receive a stipend of 50 Euros/day for living expenses.

During their stay, visitors have access to the LIS and LWS microdata, using the remote-access system, and to relevant data documentation.  Furthermore, direct on-site access is allowed for LIS and LWS datasets whose providers have given their consent for such access.  Note that there are special conditions for use of these datasets and it will be the visitors’ responsibility to meet these conditions before direct access will be allowed

Visiting Scholars are assigned office space in the LIS office, and given access to a personal computer with office applications and statistical software packages, including STATA, SPSS and SAS. The LIS staff is available for consultation, assistance and possible collaboration.

Visiting Scholar grants may be awarded to individual researchers or to groups of several researchers working on a joint project.

APPROPRIATE PROJECTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

LIS welcomes proposals related to the comparative study of income inequality, poverty, employment, social policy and other related topics, using the LIS microdata.

Visitors are expected to present an informal seminar at LIS.

The results of any research carried out either wholly or in part during the visit should appear in the Working Papers Series before publication.

HOW TO APPLY

Interested candidates are invited to submit applications by e-mail to Caroline de Tombeur, LIS Administrative Assistant

An application form is available on-line, in PDF format
(
Note you can fill it in and print it with acrobat reader but you need acrobat professional to be able to save it to be sent by email).
A brief curriculum vitae and the description of the research project must be provided, preferably in PDF or DOC format.

DEADLINE

Research proposals are accepted all year round without any deadline restriction.

 WHO MAY APPLY

The LIS Visiting Scholars program is open to researchers of all nationalities. However, preference will be given to researchers from LIS participating countries.  Applications are welcomed from researchers at all levels of seniority.

REVIEW AND SELECTION PROCEDURES

The Visiting Scholars Selection Committee will evaluate each proposal based on the quality of the project – considering the scientific and technical value, originality, methodological approach, and potential for academic publication -- and on the benefit to the proposal from a visit to LIS.

In addition, projects that propose to leave a product behind that can be used by LIS staff and other LIS users and researchers – for example, a new dataset or a methodological contribution – will be given the highest priority.

FEEDBACK TO APPLICANTS

Applicants will be informed of the results of their application within four to eight weeks after the submission of their proposal. If the Selection Committee rejects a proposal, it will indicate the reasons for the rejection and possibly make suggestions for a revised proposal.

SPONSOR

The LIS Visiting Scholars Program is supported by the Luxembourg Ministry for Culture, Higher Education and Research.
